I love this place, what it stands for, and the people and environment that make it so special. It has been an honour to be a student here at RMIT. As I look back, I would like to share some of my thoughts and the key factors that have guided me on my journey at RMIT. After finishing the first offline semester, I am able to benefit from a variety of new skills and things in the Making Media class.
Leadership is a critical soft skill that I think everybody should have. In the assignment 2, my team gave me the chance to serve as a leader and motivate others to achieve a common goal which was the highest grading for the assignment. I am deeply grateful for it because they had a faith in me. It was honourable to use my skill to influence and guide other members to create something new. It is not about me, but rather the people I work with and the impact I make. I had to admit it was really a rough time. It was twice as much pressure; I was not making up things for only me but for four more people from time management to assign a role for an individual. Conflicts had occurred during workflow due to different personalities, working styles, and disagreements. To be specific, our team all agreed on the same style of the magazine and how it would look on the draft; however, one of the team members submitted a different creative idea and would not cooperate if we did not follow. I was really pissed off and just wanted to get out of this team. I realized that I was in charge and I was the only person to handle this conflict or it would later affect the inter-working of the team negatively. I was the one approaching her first and we had a little talk. At first, I said sorry for being a poor leader and was not respect her idea. I also showed her how the two ideas could be linked together. We both appreciated and continued what we left off. As a matter of fact, conflict management is a process of identification of conflict and resolving it quickly and fairly that every leader should know to limit the negative aspects of the work process.
One of my biggest concerns entering this course is the overwhelming work. I heard from the senior that I had as quick as lighting to do the work. Numerous tasks and deadlines need to be met in the last couple of weeks. These pressures could make me anxious, frustrated, and stressed out. There was a time I nearly passed out right at my workplace due to the high volume of work. As a student, I always had a feeling that I would not have enough time to fulfilled all necessary tasks. Besides, I was also aware of the quality of my work. With the help of friends and family, I decided to take a relaxing break and sat down to organize things over again. Stress is a challenge that everyone would encounter, it could be school or work-related. Stress management is also an essential skill for my future career as I would be well-prepared and ready to face unpredictable situations.
Throughout the course, I have experienced highs and lows alike, some are more important than others and this class offers professional and educational benefits in my major, Professional Communication. Now that I am finally achieving these milestones, everything is starting to feel all right at last. it has been a long, long journey to get here but in many ways, it is just the end of one chapter of an endless book about “me”.
